Introduction to Documentary Photography

Date: Sep 14-21, 2019
Time: 10:00 am - 06:00 pm
Venue: CPB Foundation

Documentary photography usually refers to a popular form of photography used to chronicle events or environments both significant and relevant to history and historical events as well as to current everyday life. Documentary work is nonfictional, intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record. A popular form of documentary photography is reportage photography, it is a photographic style that captures a moment or event in a narrative fashion, i.e., where the images tell a story wherein there is an accurate representation of the story/people.

Sign up for this week-long workshop at the CPB Learning Lab to learn the foundations of documentary photography with our founding member and documentary photographer, Shuchi Kapoor.

About the mentor:

Shuchi Kapoor is a self-taught Indian documentary photojournalist. Her work focuses on humanistic stories and documentation spanning across regions, cultures, and mindsets in her country. Her folio presents visual narratives on human rights, environment, politics, the aftermath of communal warfare, refugee life, gender and sexuality, mental health, juvenile and child labor, social & ethnographic cultural practices and more.

The workshop will look at exploring social issues and documentation through a visual format. Establishing a narrative of what you will be focusing on, we will build a work-plan on how to go ahead with research and groundwork. You will learn how to adapt yourself in the field and how to build trust with the people of your story. All through the week, each participant will be given guidance on documenting a particular story and a minimum of 20-30 images will be expected to be reviewed on. The final projects will be assessed and assembled to be presented at the end of the workshop.
