Photographs continue to dominate our visual culture and often hold our attention in the digital age, however, photographs in the 21st century are quickly being appropriated into viral memes on the Internet. Memes are often social commentary about our present times. They have become more visible on social media due to the rise of fake news, shorter attention span, and reactions to political or social issues. Memes have the ability to spread like wildfire allowing certain messages and political views to be pushed into the mainstream. In recent years, however, the meme culture has also established itself as a means of strategic communication. The jokes are not only being circulated for the laughs but to disseminate political propaganda, advertising, brands, and public figures.

In this workshop, you will learn how to use their own archive of photographs, create memes from historic/found images, spotting a meme trend, creating their own unique meme aesthetic, and using memes as forms of activism and dissent.
