By Gauri Gill
Developed over the last sixteen years, artist Gauri Gill’s 1984 notebook (and accompanying bibliography) is a powerful account of the anti-Sikh pogroms from that year that took place in New Delhi. This extensive and layered body of work in the form of a free to download notebook contains photographs, survivor testimonials, witness accounts and moving responses from a host of artists and intellectuals. The site of multiple instances of protracted violence in recent memory, Delhi bore witness to the communal brutality of 2020 just before the Pandemic unleashed its own ferocity upon the city. Gauri’s work impels us to never forget, while providing an exemplary and ongoing collective archive on the nature and trauma of violence and its manifold truths.
