No Longer A Single Root (2021),
Nico Joana Weber
Inspired by Édouard Glissant’s reflections on creolization, Nico Joana Weber’s film “No Longer A Single Root” (2021), a CPB commission and premiere, traces transcultural endeavors that became manifest in different examples of Nigerian building culture and under different historical and political circumstances. Among them is the modernist campus of Nigeria’s first university, the University of Ibadan. The legacy of modernist architecture and urban planning that becomes evident here forms a constant topic in Weber’s work, such as the film “Markasit” (2014) – which is also on display in the biennale’s screening room – that unfolds a fantastic narration of the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany’s first new university after WW2, and of the entanglement of the brutalist concrete architecture with its environment.
